The Department of Otolaryngology at the D. Y. Patil University, Kolhapur holds as its mission ‘the commitment to improving the quality of life of individuals and families through patient care, teaching, and the discovery of new knowledge.’ We believe that through the exceptional care of patients, the firm dedication to educating future otolaryngologists and the vital performance of research, the department is achieving its mission.
The heart and soul of any department are, of course, its faculty. Our accomplished faculty provides diagnosis and treatments for disorders of Ear, Nose, Throat, head and neck cancer including vertigo, smell disturbance, taste disorders, voice disorders and hearing & speech impediment. We have specialty outpatient clinics including head and neck tumor, voice and language, peadiatric and allergic diseases. Out patients are seen on all days except Sundays. Emergency services are provided on all days including holidays by the duty team of ENT Consultant & Junior Residents.
Keeping pace with the advances made in the field of ENT, the Operating room is very well equipped with advanced equipments such as operating microscope, high speed drill, HD camera with high definition monitors, nasal endoscopes and microdebrider. Recently we have started Cochlear Implant Programme under the government scheme RBSK and these surgeries are routinely performed in the department.
All ENT, Head and Neck Surgeries from routine like Tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, septoplasty, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgeries (FESS) to advanced surgeries like ossiculoplasty, microlaryngoscopy are performed by the experienced team of Consultants. In addition, the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) works in close tandem with our department lending itself amply to the philosophy of Multidisciplinary approach to solving patient’s problems, related to Audiology, Speech Language and Auditory verbal therapy (AVT) and also cochlear implant rehabilitation.
The Consultants keep updating their skills by interactive sessions with the masters in the field of ENT through CME programme, workshops and conferences, both nationally and internationally.
In addition to patient care, the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery has ongoing research endeavors where faculty, residents and medical students work together to investigate problems and questions through research projects. Till date our faculty and students have won 17 prizes including prestigious RAF Cooper award & gold Medal in National Otology conference. We have 43 presentations in various international & National conferences & 32 Publications in various Journals to our credit.
Alumni of our department have distinguished themselves through their work and done the institute proud. Many of them are working as a faculty in medical colleges. Dr Priyanka Misale is selected for fellowship in Fisch International Microsugery Foundation, University of Zurich, Switzerland & Toronto General Hospital, Department of Neurotology. Dr. Renu Satbinder has done fellowship in Cochlear Implant in USA. Dr Sombit joined Indian Army as a Captain after finishing post graduation from our department.
The department has done exemplary work in COVID era in various fronts including sample collections, training of personnel and treating patients with Mucormycosis. We have performed more than 100 successful surgeries under MJPJAY.
The ENT department is in the process of continuously upgrading itself to keep pace with the ever growing demands of patient care. It will leave no stone unturned in improving itself to provide world class health care.
